About the Artist

Alice Anderson was born in London in 1972, where she currently lives and works.

In her practice, Alice Anderson privileges gesture and movement over language, and repetition over isolated acts. Her work is, above all, performative. She has cultivated an intense awareness of her sensory experiences, which become the primary materials of her artistic process. Anderson has developed a technique to “memorize” objects destined to disappear by wrapping them in copper wire—a process akin to weaving that interrogates our collective memory.

At Atelier Calder, Anderson focused on iconic architectural elements of the Calder-designed studio, including the windows, the floor, and the door. The triangular shapes captured her interest as she developed her residency project, The Ritual of the Shapes (2019). This motif opened an infinite field of experimentation for the artist, resulting in monumental paintings, sculptures, and a performance. Anderson continued her process of memorization, generating a new Data Architecture born from unprecedented performances that elevated accidental gestures and unpredictable movements into an ultimate act of creation and a reminder of what makes us human.
