Jaume Plensa

March—August 1996

About the Artist

Jaume Plensa was born in Barcelona in 1955 and lives and works between Barcelona and Paris.

Initially working with bronze, cast iron, wrought iron, and reclaimed materials, Jaume Plensa developed a sculptural practice alongside a sustained exploration of drawing and printmaking. Over time, light, sound, and video became integral to his work, which increasingly took on a monumental scale. Today, Plensa is a leading figure in contemporary sculpture, with many of his site-specific works created for public spaces around the world.

From the 1990s onward, figurative elements gradually disappeared from Plensa’s work as he continued to experiment with iron in combination with light-transmitting materials such as resin and glass. During his residency at Atelier Calder, Plensa developed this approach through a series of cabin-like structures made of iron frames and translucent resin panels engraved with texts.
