About the Artist
Jessica Stockholder was born in Seattle in 1959 and lives and works in New York.
Jessica Stockholder’s work ranges from monumental installations to smaller-scale constructions, often made from everyday and found objects that are assembled, taped together, draped in fabric, or covered with blocks of paint. Her installations are shaped by an interest in color, volume, surface, and composition—elements traditionally associated with painting. She often juxtaposes complementary colors to create visual tensions that shape and structure a space.
During her time at Atelier Calder, Stockholder created two installations that were exhibited simultaneously, one at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes and the other at the Musée Picasso in Antibes. Both works took the form of architectural structures conceived in relation to their surroundings, with the balance between disparate elements carefully orchestrated. In Nantes, Nit Picking Trumpets of Iced Blues Vagaries (1998) consisted of a monumental stack of buckets whose imposing volume responded to the more classical architecture of the museum’s Salle Blanche. In Antibes, where the space is more delicate, the installation was linear, unfolding like a drawing in space.
