Kitty Kraus
January—April 2016About the Artist
Kitty Kraus was born in Heidelberg, Germany, in 1976 and lives and works in Berlin.
For each of her projects, Kitty Kraus develops a unique working method. She begins by exploring different lines of inquiry using scale models, which she then translates into minimalist installations that bring together elements of alchemy and physics. The materials Kraus uses—glass, ice, beams of light and color, and mirrors—are chosen for their capacity to transform. They can appear, disappear, liquefy, or explode. What interests Kraus is capturing that moment of instability, the transition from one state to another. Her works invite us to engage in a profound philosophical reflection that extends beyond the realm of art, prompting us to reconsider our own existence.
At Atelier Calder, Kitty Kraus created a series of metal works that subverted the rigidity of the material through soft, fluid forms unfolding across their supports. The artist’s central installation consisted of metal lines tracing a path across the floor, guiding the viewer toward a mirror that reflected the studio space. The arrangement created a kind of poetic mise en abyme of the studio and the shards of light that came through the windows.
