About the Artist

Marina Abramović was born in Belgrade in 1946 and lives and works in New York.

Since the early 1970s, Marina Abramović has pushed the boundaries of performance art by making her body the primary medium of her work. Through a combination of physical endurance, psychological stamina, and engagement with the audience, her work questions the very nature of her artistic experience. Her collaboration with Ulay from 1976 to 1988 left a profound mark on the history of contemporary art and helped redefine the language of performance art.

At Atelier Calder, Abramović created a video, a series of photographs, and several performances as part of her Energy Clothes (2001) project. Visitors were invited to wear garments embedded with magnets and to follow a protocol that turned simple, everyday actions into rituals. By making the spectator the medium for the artwork, Abramović transformed them into a “transitional object” capable of emitting and receiving energy.
