About the Artist

Mark Dion was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, in 1961 and lives and works in Beach Lake, Pennsylvania.

Mark Dion’s work makes explicit reference to cabinets of curiosities and draws inspiration from the history of museums. He speaks not directly to nature but to the idea of nature. For several years, he has worked to deconstruct and subvert the visual codes and ideologies that shape our knowledge and experience of nature, basing his work on close study of how nature is represented in scientific and cultural institutions such as natural history museums and zoos.
