Peter Soriano
January—June 2004About the Artist
Peter Soriano was born in Manila in 1959 and lives and works in New York.
Peter Soriano’s works begin as ideas and drawings that are later realized as abstract sculptures in resin, metal, or wood. Details within some of his sculptures suggest specific objects—mechanical parts, toys, or human forms—but seen as a whole, they remain difficult to define, often combining vivid colors with rounded forms.
During his residency at Atelier Calder, Soriano developed the artistic and technical aspects of a new series of sculptures, exploring different ways for them to interact with one another. Some were connected by straps, defining their own space while also delineating the space occupied by the viewer. Others were developed using computer-aided design, allowing him to model the sculptures in three dimensions. The sculptures produced at Atelier Calder were later exhibited at FRAC Auvergne in 2007 as part of a solo exhibition.
