Samara Golden
January—April 2022About the Artist
Samara Golden was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in 1973 and lives and works in Los Angeles.
Golden creates immersive installations that transform the viewer’s perception of space through the use of mirrors, glass, and reflective surfaces. Her environments blur the boundaries between reality and illusion, creating the impression of infinite or impossible architectures. Although people are rarely present, traces of everyday life—abandoned interiors, scattered belongings, and unfinished meals—suggest lives interrupted, evoking feelings of absence, unease, and psychological tension. Balancing formal precision with emotional depth, Golden uses these fragmented spaces as metaphors for the complexities and vulnerabilities of contemporary human experience.
During her residency at Atelier Calder, Golden developed a project through an open-ended process of experimentation with a range of materials rather than beginning from a fixed concept. Building on her interest in the relationship between physical space and emotional experience, she sought to introduce a greater sense of immediacy into her work, allowing the installation to capture emotions as they emerged during the creative process. The residency provided a context for exploring new ways of translating lived experience into immersive spatial environments.
