About the Artist

Sarah Sze was born in New York in 1969, where she lives and works.

Since the late 1990s, Sarah Sze has assembled everyday objects into delicate, complex installations that blur the boundaries between painting, sculpture, and architecture. Her works are organized within intricate structures, often resembling labyrinthine systems inspired by architecture and urban environments. She collects small everyday found objects and carefully assembles them onto rigid wooden or metal structures, whose rhythm and movement organize the work as a whole. Monumental yet precarious, her installations evoke the constant, improvised activity of the urban landscape.

At Atelier Calder, Sze translated the architectural conditions of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where her work was exhibited in November 2003, into the space of the studio. Atelier Calder provided a space for experimentation, allowing her to work across multiple media while exploring ideas of entropy and temporality.
