About the Artist

Tara Donovan was born in New York in 1969, where she currently lives and works.

Donovan creates sculptures from everyday materials that she transforms into abstract forms with unexpected textures, both familiar and strange. Through the repetition of simple elements, her works create a sense of vastness. Her forms either follow the inherent qualities of the materials or challenge them, creating unexpected and almost surreal results. Donovan’s work shares affinities with Minimalism through its exploration of repetition, seriality, and the relationship between sculpture and the space it occupies. At the same time, her practice is shaped by a fascination with natural forms and landscapes.

Donovan was the recipient of the 2005 Calder Prize. At Atelier Calder, she created a monumental work composed of a series of glass plates of varying sizes, broken and then reassembled. The resulting structure evokes the layered formations of a mountain range.
