Tomás Saraceno
February—July 2010About the Artist
Tomás Saraceno was born in San Miguel de Tucumán, Argentina, in 1973 and lives and works in Frankfurt.
Tomás Saraceno’s work is developed in collaboration with local communities, scientific researchers, and institutions around the world. Through these collaborations, he explores new relationships between humans, technology, and biology. His floating sculptures, community projects, and interactive installations propose new, more sustainable ways of inhabiting and perceiving our environment. For more than two decades, Saraceno has explored the possibility of life in the air, imagining a utopian future of floating cities made up of cell-like structures that could move and reconfigure themselves like clouds. His work draws on the avant-garde ideas of R. Buckminster Fuller, Gyula Kosice, Yona Friedman, and other visionary architects, while proposing new ways of living. His projects invite us to imagine different ways to relate to one another and our environment.
Saraceno was the recipient of the 2009 Calder Prize. During his residency at Atelier Calder, he continued developing Air-Port-City / Cloud Cities, which explores new ways of occupying space. The project imagines spaces for living through a system of floating, inflatable structures.
