About the Artist
Trisha Donnelly was born in San Francisco in 1974 and lives and works in New York.
Trisha Donnelly makes conceptual work in a wide range of media, including drawing, sculpture, video, and performance, which she describes as “situation sculpture.” Her work often begins with an event that cannot be reproduced, presenting an otherwise incommunicable message almost as superstition. By reducing conventional visual and linguistic information, she invites viewers to sharpen their intuition and memory and to use free association. Moving between traditional and contemporary media, she links event and accident, apparition and disappearance, creating a strange flux that seems to communicate and exchange at once.
Donnelly’s residency at Atelier Calder was an experiment in immersion in a new cultural, historical, and sociological environment. She is interested in confronting her work with new types of space, which imply new limits and constraints and therefore new responses to the established rules of the exhibition space, usually devoted to contemplation.
