About the Artist

William Lamson was born in Arlington, Virginia, in 1977 and lives and works in Brooklyn.

William Lamson’s multidisciplinary practice encompasses video, photography, performance, sculpture, and installation. Through long-duration performances and carefully staged actions within landscapes, often captured on film, Lamson explores the relationship between humans and natural forces. Combining scientific processes with organic forms, his installations examine natural phenomena through a sensitive and investigative approach, revealing the subtle interactions between material, environment, and time.

During his residency at Atelier Calder, Lamson developed projects exploring the relationship between geology and architecture. He collected sixteen flint stones—a material used in the construction of the studio—from the surrounding grounds and created a series of casts that became a group of abstract sculptures. He also worked with discarded mechanical components, transforming them through processes such as crystallization and water erosion. By drawing on scientific methods and materials, Lamson investigated the evolving relationship between human beings and their natural, artificial, and technological environments.
