About the Artist

Zineb Sedira was born in Paris in 1963 and lives and works between Paris, London, and Algiers.

Zineb Sedira’s work explores the intimate and biographical through a multicultural lens, examining narratives of migration, memory, and identity. Working across photography, video, sculpture, installation, and performance, she uses art as a means of resisting forgetting and challenging dominant narratives. Her early work focused on her family history and Algerian, French, and British identities before expanding to broader questions of memory and collective history. Following her return to Algeria in the early 2000s, she developed a research-based practice drawing on archives and personal testimonies to bring overlooked histories back into focus to be passed on to future generations. Her interest in the period of African liberation movements and the emergence of militant Algerian cinema has led her to explore ideas of otherness, solidarity, and hospitality.

At Atelier Calder, Sedira’s residency was closely connected to her solo exhibition at Tate Britain in London (May 2026). During her time in Saché, she conducted research using film archives and experimented with different ways of presenting and displaying archival material. In Les rêves n’ont pas de titre (2022), Sedira highlighted the connections between three centers of avant-garde cinema in the 1960s and 1970s—Venice, Algiers, and Paris—where numerous fruitful film coproductions emerged.
